Things I'm reading in 2020
The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Phillip II, Fernand Braudel
An incredibly dense read on the topic of the Mediterranean region in the second half of the 16th century. I thoroughly enjoy the thesis—history can only truly be understood by stepping back and viewing everything that came before it. It’s just that “everything that came before it” is a ocean of information.
I’ve been struggling through this book for somewhere near two years now, at most 10 pages per reading session.
Rationality: A–Z, Eliezer Yudkowsky
I am carefully delving into the rationality world. I’ve heard the community likened to a cult, They definitely have their own separate internet presence… and cults aren’t what I’m wanting to get into right now. What I’ve found so far is useful information about mental biases—spotting them, and combatting them—and about developing a view of the world that’s truly the most accurate you can based on the information currently available to you.
This is fairly accessible material in case you’re interested.
